Recycled Pallet Housing

While doing some research on humanitarian-based architecture throughout the world, I came across an idea that is, though not necessarily a profound or extremely ‘new’ development, but nonetheless one that pushes the realm of ideas in how to reuse existing (and currently unused) products for the benefit of those in need of immediate shelter.  The article deals with the flood that occurred somewhat recently in Sri Lanka leaving nearly half a million people homeless, and articulates the process of constructing a quite contemporary-designed efficient and affordable housing by utilizing wood pallets typically used solely for shipping of goods.  This design was innovated by the group I-Beam Design, a New York based architecture firm that seeks to create inhabitable spaces that adapt according to their contextual placement. As the article describes, these pallets create a desirable living environment that is quite structurally sound as a result of the composition of the pallets.
